Fencing has been one of the foundations of Physical Education and Sport at West Point since the Academy’s founding over 200 years ago. Steeped in the traditions of Cavalry Training and Bayonet Drills, fencing – especially the tactical aspects of the sport – has always had military relevance and applications for Cadets. Leap forward years later to Fencing as a Physical Education Class, then Corp Squad Sport, and now a Competitive Team sponsored by the Department of Physical Education (DPE).
Thirty Cadets are given authos to train on the Fencing Team from August to May. The team competes in the Mid Atlantic and South Atlantic Conferences, the National Intercollegiate Women’s Fencing Association and competes against mostly varsity collegiate fencing teams. It’s a full season that culminates in our National Championships, the Military Cup and the US Military Fencing Championships.
