The mission of the Center for Leader Development in STEM (CLDSTEM) is to build an academic pipeline to educate and inspire new STEM talent for West Point, the U.S. Army, and the nation. This mission aligns with the national need to increase the number of STEM experts, for a talent shortage threatens the country’s ability to drive innovation, compete internationally, and protect national security. This national need coincides with a need for Army officers with higher scientific and technological literacy who can effectively lead in an increasingly complex operational environment.
The U.S. Military Academy is one of the country’s most highly regarded undergraduate engineering schools, requiring competency in STEM among all its cadets. While West Point has always strongly emphasized STEM, it recognizes the urgent need to do more - specifically among underrepresented populations in the STEM workforce. We believe diversity of thought and perspective fuels innovation and strive to equip our students with the skills and knowledge to significantly contribute to the global STEM community.
Applications are now being accepted for the 2025 Summer STEM programs. There will be two sessions:
Middle School Week: June 2-6 for 6th and 7th graders
High School Week: June 9-13 for 8th and 9th graders
The deadline for applications is Feb. 17
West Point cadets in the role of near-peer mentors work alongside faculty to lead workshops for middle and high school students around the U.S. and at West Point. These hands-on workshops on bridge design, robotics, renewable energy, and drones spark interest in STEM among young students and introduce them to related careers.
CLDSTEM, along with support from organizations across the academy, hosts summer STEM camps at West Point. This is a wonderful opportunity for middle and high school students to visit the academy, work with USMA cadets and faculty, and participate in STEM workshops in our classrooms and labs.
The Office of Research helps coordinate USMA’s research efforts with external entities. Those interested in conducting research with West Point can email the Associate Dean for Research.
