IAW the Belmont Report, cadets have the right to voluntarily participate in research, to withdraw from a study at any time, and to refuse to participate without consequences. It is your choice. If you have any questions about your participation in research, contact the USMA HRPP at HRPP@westpoint.edu.
IAW 24 U.S.C. 30, payment to federal employees and active-duty military personnel for participation in research while on duty is limited to blood donation and may not exceed $50 per blood draw.
The researcher must obtain permission to grant extra credit and there are some restrictions. The combined total of extra credit from participation in one or more research projects cannot exceed 3% of the overall course grade. Some academic departments may have additional restrictions such as – extra credit cannot be used to change a failing grade to a passing grade.
All research projects are different. You should ask the researcher any questions that you have, including about the potential risks to you as a participant. Most research at USMA is minimal risk. The risks are normally not physical, but are risks related to data or information such as risks of a loss of privacy or breach of confidentiality.

Most research at USMA does not have any direct benefits for the participants. The benefits are usually for future cadets or Soldiers who will benefit from the new knowledge gained through the research.
